The Client and the Challenge
A Canadian-based occupational health and safety service provider that works across North America. It is a key player in the mining, forestry, and construction supply chain. The company wished to stay competitive, meet regulations, and manage risk, realizing the need to formalize its ESG policies to fulfill these requirements.
The company had robust policies in place and excelled at ensuring employee well-being. However, they were not unified into a single vision and spread out across many organizational manuals. Simultaneously, government agencies, industrial players, and clients demanded more regulations and sustainability commitments. They included detailed disclosure on anti-bribery policies, whistleblower protection, social responsibility, and environmental performance. The client needed a streamlined, impactful sustainability strategy – one that resonated with internal teams and external partners. Moreover, it needed to fit their needs for confidentiality, efficiency, and small team size.
Our Solution:
YellowYellow partnered with the client to transform their sustainability challenges into competitive advantages. We used the following three-phased approach:
- Initial Consultation & Analysis
- Industry Insights & Peer Benchmarking: We evaluated trends and best practices across environmental stewardship, employee well-being, procurement, and data protection.
- In-Depth Review: By conducting an examination of existing sustainability practices, we found areas needing urgent attention.
- Materiality & Gap Assessment
- We conducted stakeholder interviews (executives, employees, external partners) to find high-priority sustainability risks — e.g., a real scenario where a nurse refused a bribe to alter medical results.onducted stakeholder interviews (executives, employees, external partners) to identify high-priority ESG risks—e.g., a real scenario where a nurse refused a bribe to alter medical results.
- Policy Audit: We mapped current policies against industry best practices (identified in phase 1) and request for proposal (RFP) requirements to identify critical gaps.
3. Sustainability Strategy & Roadmap
- Policy Consolidation: We centralized sustainability policies into a user-friendly summary document. It incorporated policies such as anti-bribery, whistleblower, and supplier code of conduct.
- Targeted Recommendations: Additional policies were recommended to bridge the gaps identified in phase 2.
- Phased Implementation Plan: Developed a roadmap featuring quick wins (policy updates, training), mid-term improvements (CSR strategy, diversity hiring), and long-term goals (advanced sustainability reporting, supply chain governance), while using a simple dashboard to help our client track progress, without overwhelming their small leadership team.
The Impact:
The transformation has been nothing short of inspiring. In a remarkably short period, our client evolved into a sustainability trailblazer—a safety-focused leader whose unified sustainability strategy now serves as a powerful differentiator in competitive tenders. Their renewed commitment to ethical practices and transparent governance has not only bolstered stakeholder trust but also infused the organization with a renewed sense of purpose and pride. Today, they stand as a testament to how a clear, human-centered approach to sustainability can drive both operational excellence and genuine social impact.
