THE CHALLENGE
The petrochemical industry, essential yet environmentally taxing, demands innovative solutions to mitigate its impact. Our client’s challenge was twofold: 1) accurately quantifying the emission savings of their products and 2) presenting these complex LCA results in a format that stakeholders, irrespective of their technical knowledge, could easily understand and engage with. This was crucial to avoid greenwashing accusations and to solidify their position as a leader in eco-friendly plastic substitutes. Most consulting firms can conduct LCAs, but few can translate these findings into interactive tools that anyone can understand.
Our Solution:
We tackled this project by first clarifying our client’s goals and then systematically breaking down the LCA into its fundamental elements. The first step was to understand the emission of standard plastic products through the extensive review of academic and industry research and come up with a baseline that will be compared with the emissions of our client’s products.
We then meticulously quantified the emissions related to our client’s product line that accounted for transportation of raw materials, use of utilities in production, and waste management processes., The innovation lay in transforming this data into an accessible format. We developed a dynamic, interactive iPad application (app) that integrated the backend calculations with a user-friendly frontend interface.
This app allowed sales personnel and potential customers to dynamically see the emissions reductions possible by buying our client’s products. The customer would input the number of different products bought and could instantly see the emissions reduced in real time.
In addition to the app, , we designed a trifold brochure in collaboration with a boutique design agency. This brochure distilled the key LCA findings into a visually appealing format that could be easily disseminated during industry tradeshows and meetings.
The Impact:
The comprehensive LCA verified that our client’s products result in 56% lower emissions than traditional plastics, translating to a substantial 800 kg reduction of CO2 per ton of product sold. YellowYellow exceeded expectations in delivering an interactive tool and trifold brochure. The Company was able to demonstrate and communicate the significant environmental advantages of their products. Our project not only fortified their market position but also drove considerable top-line growth.
At YellowYellow we specialize in GHG accounting and emission analysis. If you are looking for help in measuring and managing your emissions or asserting the emission savings of your products, we would be happy to assist.
