Sigfusson Northern (SNL) is a private heavy civil contractor based in Winnipeg, Manitoba with operations across Canada. Operational diversification and continuous growth have allowed SNL to position themselves as a leading general contracting and heavy construction firm with approximately 1,000 employees.
THE CHALLENGE
The construction and heavy equipment industries are seeing increasing stakeholder pressure from an Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) perspective. SNL’s Board of Directors and Senior Management team identified a valuable opportunity to strengthen the organization’s positioning amongst peers by building out an impactful ESG strategy, with potential to lead to a broader communications plan in the longer-term. With operations in proximity to several First Nations communities, stakeholder relations and impact have always been at the forefront of SNL’s organization.
SNL recognized the need to strengthen their competitive edge but needed a cohesive strategy. With limited capacity to spare, SNL needed support to get this done with pace
OUR APPROACH
This project was propelled by Floyd Buhler, the Director of Health, Safety and Environment. His vantage point was instrumental to this effort because he is responsible for critical aspects of daily operations and long-term strategy. With his unwavering support, we launched swiftly into action.
We started with an assessment of SNL’s internal policies, organizational structure and governance framework. Next we conducted a gap analysis and a materiality assessment to benchmark SNL against its peers in the construction and heavy equipment sectors. We interviewed internal and external stakeholders to identify immediate pain points and tailor the effort to SNL’s needs. Through regular touchpoints, we worked together to set ambitious yet attainable goals as well as a roadmap for implementation.
THE RESULT
Without detracting from Floyd’s day-to-day responsibilities, an ESG strategy emerged that was woven into SNL’s core values, tied to “Radicle Climate Smart” initiative, and delivered rigour to key processes. This is expected to generate new revenue streams and increase their operational efficiency.
